List of Foods With Bacteria

Foods that contain potentially helpful bacteria are known as probiotics. According to Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, Michael Picco, M.D., probiotic foods contain bacteria similar to the healthy variety found in the body. They probiotics aren't necessary for good health, but they can aid in digestion and may help the body fend off harmful bacteria.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a well-known source of healthy bacteria. According to natural health expert, Andrew Weil, M.D., yogurt contains a healthy bacteria called acidophilus that can help the body fight infection. Low-fat yogurt is also a valuable source of lean protein and nutrients such as vitamin D and calcium. Incorporate yogurt into your diet on a regular basis for best probiotic benefits.

Fermented Milk

Fermented milk, also known as cultured milk, contains lactic acid bacteria that has probiotic effects (Picco). The fermentation process of food and beverages is often done to preserve the shelf life of the product or to attain a certain flavor. Buttermilk and kefir are common forms of fermented milk available in American supermarkets. Incorporate buttermilk into batter for pancakes, biscuits and muffins to increase healthy bacteria in your diet. Keep in mind that leftover buttermilk can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or frozen for longer time periods. Check food packaging to ensure proper use and safety. Kefir is a thick beverage, similar to yogurt in flavor. Drink low-fat kefir on a regular basis for best probiotic benefits.

Miso

Miso is a fermented soybean paste that also contains healthy bacteria (Weil). Miso is also high in tryptophan, an important amino acid, and nutrients such as maganese and vitamin K. Miso is found in a variety of traditional Asian recipes, including miso soup. Incorporate miso paste into meals as a spicy condiment or to add flavor and nutritional value to foods. Since many probiotics come from dairy products, miso is a valuable choice for those with dairy intolerance or who partake in a vegan lifestyle.
