How to Reduce Under Eye Circles

Under eye circles are round, uniform areas of darker pigmentation under each eye, according to the Mayo Clinic. Under eye circles are not normally a sign of serious illness or exhaustion, but make you look like you are tired or suffer from an illness. According to healthguiadance.org, the skin below the eyes is thin and can become dry, making the tiny veins under the eyes appear more pronounced, leading to the appearance of under eye circles. Dark circles are caused by heredity, lack of sleep, bone structure, sun exposure, medications, poor nutrition and age. However, you can reduce the appearance of under eye circles.

Step 1

Sleep at least eight hours each night and drink at least 10 glasses of water every day to keep hydrated, according to fatfreekitchen.com. Sleep helps the body heal and restore itself, and keeping hydrated minimizes dry skin and reduces the appearance of the tiny veins under the eyes that give the appearance of dark circles. Keeping hydrated also reduces swelling in certain areas of the body, including under the eyes.

Step 2

Seep 2 black teabags in 1/2 cup of hot water for approximately 1 minute. Add 1/2 cup of ice cubes to the cup to cool down the teabags. Remove the teabags and ring out any excess moisture, then place a teabag over each closed eye. Leave teabags on eyes for 10 to 15 minutes before removing. The tannin contained in the teabags helps to reduce swelling and discoloration under eyes, according to nutralegacy.com.

Step 3

Massage a few drops of almond oil under and around eyes twice daily to moisturize and reduce the appearance of circles under the eyes. According to pioneerthinking.com, almond oil is a natural emollient, and Ayurvedic practitioners commonly use almond oil as a treatment for dark under eye circles.

Step 4

Run two metal spoons under cold water for a few minutes, dry off and gently press the curved portions against the eyes. Leave the spoons on the eyes for a minute to reduce puffiness. Do not press too hard as you can damage the delicate skin around the eyes.

Step 5

Apply a good eye cream that contains plumping agents or alphahydroxy acids, which can thicken skin, or creams containing vitamins C or K, which can inflame and add volume to skin.
