Information About Ortho Evra Transdermal Patch

Ortho Evra is a form of birth control that reduces your chances of getting pregnant. According to Drugs.com, this medication is available as a transdermal patch that is applied to your skin.

Features

Drugs.com indicates that Ortho Evra is a combination of the female hormones ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin. It works to prevent egg release (ovulation) and alter the tissue lining of your uterus and cervix. This makes it nearly impossible for a sperm to fertilize your egg.

Side Effects

The National Library of Medicine indicates that Ortho Evra's common side effects include nausea, irregular vaginal bleeding, breast tenderness and headache. Ortho Evra can also increase your chances of developing blood clots and having a heart attack or stroke.

Use

Drugs.com says that you must apply Ortho Evra onto your upper thigh, buttock, upper back, stomach or upper arm. You must apply it on the first day of your menstrual period or on the first Sunday after your menstrual period. You will apply a new patch every week for three weeks.

Warning

Avoid smoking, especially if you are older than 35 years of age, when using the Ortho Evra patch. The combination increases your risk of developing blood clots. Inform your doctor if you have a history of blood clots, breast or uterine cancer, liver cancer or tumors, and heart problems, as Ortho Evra can worsen these conditions.

Overdose

Placing more Orthro Evra patches on your skin than indicated can lead to nausea, vaginal bleeding and vomiting. Seek immediate medical assistance.
