Losing weight is challenging, no matter what your body type. Knowing your body type, however, can help you lose weight in the most efficient way possible. There are three primary body types. Ectomorphs tend to be tall and thin with less body fat, mesomorphs are more muscular and endomorphs are more efficient at carrying excess body fat. While most people have some body characteristics from each of these categories, each of us tends to fall mainly into one category--enough to decide how best to control weight for your body type.
Step 1
Examine your body characteristics to determine your body type. Observe your shoulder and hip width, facial width, narrowness of chest and abdomen and thinness and length of arms and legs. Narrow, slender or long features may indicate an ectomorphic body. Larger, broader upper body features point to a mesomorphic type. Still broader, more rounded features are found in mesomorphic body types.
Step 2
Consider your metabolism as it relates to body type. Metabolic rate often can be used to determine the type of body a person has. Ectomorphs usually have higher metabolic rates and burn calories more efficiently. The metabolism of mesomorphs tends to be slower but oriented toward muscle gain. Endomorphs often have metabolic rates that are very slow. Adjust your diet to accommodate your metabolism, based on your body type.
Step 3
Consider your physical abilities to help determine body type. Different body types tend to excel at different activities. Ectomorphs perform better in activities that favor a more slender build, such as long-distance running and basketball. Mesomorphs often are more proficient at power sports, including soccer, baseball and gymnastics. Endomorphs do well at long-distance swimming, field events or weight lifting.
