Yeast Infection Symptoms When Pregnant

Yeast infections occur more frequently when a woman is pregnant than at any other time in her life, according to the American Pregnancy Association. The symptoms of a yeast infection are the same regardless of whether a woman is pregnant or not. However, some changes in the body during pregnancy, such as an increase in vaginal discharge, may cause pregnant women to overlook yeast infection symptoms because they assume the symptom is caused by the pregnancy and not the infection. However, if pregnant women keep in mind the three distinct symptoms of a yeast infection, it may be easier to recognize if they may have a yeast infection. Women experiencing these symptoms should contact a doctor for treatment options.

Discharge

Changes in vaginal discharge are common for pregnant women to experience even when they do not have a yeast infection. However, when a pregnant woman does have a yeast infection, the discharge takes on the distinct smell of yeast or bread. This discharge usually has a consistency of cottage cheese and is plentiful. Although it is usually white, it may also may be yellowish or greenish, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Itching and Irritation

Yeast infections typically cause an uncomfortable, persistent itching sensation surrounding the lips of the vagina. The skin in this area usually becomes irritated and red, according to BabyCenter.com, and sometimes swelling may also occur.

Burning

A burning sensation can also be present during a yeast infection. However, it may not be constant and persistent like the itching sensation. Instead, according to the American Pregnancy Association, it typically occurs while a woman is urinating or engaging in sexual intercourse.
