How to Get Smooth Skin

Many people have better looking skin than they realize but it is hidden by unevenness. Rough skin can be caused by dryness, calluses, razor bumps, a buildup of dead skin cells or other skin conditions or ailments. It does not take much to smooth the skin, just a few simple steps will reveal healthier tissues below the surface. There is no need for fancy products, just a few simple things you may already have around the house.

Step 1

Slough off existing dry skin cells with a natural exfoliator like oatmeal mixed with water to form a paste-like texture. Apply the mixture to rough skin and gently massage. Be sure to use enough water to make the oatmeal glide easily over the skin. This step is not recommended for open wounds, scabs or razor bumps.

Step 2

Slather on a thick moisturizer or petroleum jelly. Jelly can be especially helpful for rough lips, knuckles, ankles, knees and elbows. Put on a bit more before bed to wake up with softer skin. In place of these creams, use hydrocortisone cream for razor bumps or open wounds that are rough.

Step 3

Protect your skin from the irritant that is causing the roughness. This includes excessive exposure to environmental conditions like sun, wind and cold temperatures. Apply a sunscreen to prevent sun damage. Use an ointment containing vitamin A and D to protect against wind and cold.

Tips and Warnings

  • Add hydration to your skin by ensuring you drink plenty of fluids. Use a humidifier if you are in a dry environment. Use mild soaps that are lye-free. Avoid skin products that contain alcohol or other irritants.
  • Visit a doctor if the rough skin does not improve or oozes, as this can be a sign of infection.
