The UltraMetabolism Diet is a diet created by physician Mark Hyman that is said to increase your metabolism and help you lose weight. Good Housekeeping magazine says the diet encourages eating unprocessed, natural foods instead of packaged foods for eight weeks. The diet, which focuses on seven main keys to weight loss, has been very successful in helping some people lose weight.
Purpose
The main purpose of the UltraMetabolism Diet is weight loss. Good Housekeeping says the diet's goal is for participants to lose 11 to 21 pounds in eight weeks. CBS News reports that other purposes of the diet include stress reduction and an overall sense of well-being. The diet is also said to help decrease inflammation in the body. Inflammation happens when the body's white blood cells become overly active, causing swelling of organs, joints or muscles. Arthritis and even myocarditis, a dangerous inflammation of the heart, are two inflammatory conditions the UltraMetabolism Diet allegedly helps prevent.
Focuses
According to the health care company UMPC, the seven key focuses of the UltraMetabolism Diet include controlling your appetite and metabolism, understanding how stress can cause weight gain, controlling inflammation in the body and preventing a slow metabolism caused by cellular "rust." Knowing how to use calories more efficiently, making sure your thyroid works well and detoxifying your liver are the other focuses of the UltraMetabolism Diet.
What's Included
The UltraMetabolism Diet includes foods that are natural and unprocessed such as fish, nuts, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, according to CBS News. Alcohol and artificial sweeteners are two of the many items not allowed on the UltraMetabolism diet. Good Housekeeping says beans and green vegetables are encouraged, instead of high-fat meats and sugary foods.
Phases
The eight-week UltraMetabolism Diet is actually broken down into several different phases, UPMC says. The first week involves getting rid of all sugar, processed foods, refined carbohydrates, caffeine and alcohol from your diet. The next three weeks involve eliminating wheat, dairy and eggs, according to UPMC. The final four weeks involve reintroducing some of the foods that were eliminated previously, while watching for any allergies or health changes.
Effectiveness
According to UPMC health care, some of the theories that form the basis for the UltraMetabolism Diet are not supported by sound scientific evidence. However, Good Housekeeping reports that even though not much study has been done on the effectiveness of the UltraMetabolism Diet, eating fewer processed foods and more whole grains, fish, fruits and vegetables is a healthy step that can promote weight loss.
