Soma, the brand name for the medication carisoprodol, is a skeletal muscle relaxant. The medication treats muscle pain caused by conditions such as sprains and strains. Soma, typically used in conjunction with resting the affected muscle and physical therapy, is an oral medication available with a doctor's prescription. According to the Mayo Clinic, this oral tablet works on the central nervous system to relax the affected muscles, thereby relieving pain and cramping. The medicine works to relieve short-term pain and the duration of use should not exceed two to three weeks. Along with the desired effects of the medication, some unwanted adverse reactions may occur.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects associated with Soma include drowsiness, dizziness and clumsiness. According to Medline Plus, the medication may also cause a headache or skin rash. Some individuals experience gastrointestinal distress, such as nausea and vomiting. These adverse reactions are generally mild and will decrease with use. If the side effects get worse or become bothersome, the doctor may choose to change the dosage or the medication.
Serious Side Effects
Some adverse reactions of Soma are more serious in nature than others. Any signs of a fever, generalized weakness or a burning feeling in the eyes need to be reported to the doctor as soon as possible. An allergy to Soma may develop. Signs of an allergic reaction include but are not limited to difficulty breathing, an increase in heart rate, hives and swelling of the face, lips or airway. Any signs of an allergic reaction require immediate medical attention.
Precautions
Because Soma may cause drowsiness or dizziness, it needs to be used with caution until all effects are known. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery while on this drug. Drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco may increase risk of these side effects.
