Fexmid is a brand name of cyclobenzaprine, a muscle relaxant medication that is available by prescription only. Fexmid can help in the relief of discomfort, stiffness and pain associated with injuries to the muscles. It works by affecting the central nervous system and also may be used in the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome, a condition in which you may have pain throughout your body and experience frequent fatigue.
Serious Side Effects
The Mayo Clinic reports that all serious side effects from the use of cyclobenzaprine are rare, but there are different levels of their severity. The most serious side effects require immediate emergency help; these symptoms include a rash on the skin, facial skin discoloration, hives, rapid breathing, itching, irregular breathing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing and hive-like swelling on the tongue, lips, face, mouth or eyelids. Also rare is fainting. Tell your doctor immediately if you have fainted while taking cyclobenzaprine. Other rare serious side effects that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible include yellow eyes or skin, unsteadiness of the body, abnormal dreams or thoughts, mental confusion, mood changes, urination difficulties and noises in the ears such as buzzing or ringing.
Non-Serious Side Effects
More common side effects from Fexmid are not potentially serious. They may be associated with starting the medication but will fade with regular use. These effects include abnormal tiredness, bloating, indigestion, uncommon weakness in the muscles, nausea, changes in the way things taste, vomiting, cramps in the stomach, insomnia, constipation and trembling. Others may include blurry vision, difficulty speaking, dizziness, palpitations, lightheadedness, numbness in the feet or hands, diarrhea, drowsiness, pain or tingling in the feet or hands, mouth dryness, weakness in the feet or hands, excitement, twitching in the muscles, nervousness, increase in the need to urinate and headaches. Call your doctor if these symptoms do not subside.
Overdose Side Effects
Fexmid is a strong medicine that may be prescribed in 10 milligram-doses that are taken three times per day in the pill form. It should not exceed 60 milligrams (mg) per day.
Time-released capsules are a dosage designed to gradually release the medication into your system, and they may be prescribed at 15 mg per day or 30 mg per day, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you exceed the prescribed dose, you may experience side effects of an overdose. They include seizures, severe drowsiness, vomiting, hot skin, auditory hallucinations, severe restlessness, sensory hallucinations, severe nervousness, visual hallucinations, breathing difficulties, a rise or fall in body temperature and a rapid heart rate, arrhythmia or an irregular heartbeat. Talk to a physician as immediately if you have taken too much and experience any of these.
