Skelaxin Medication Side Effects

Skelaxin, the brand name for metaxalone, is an oral medication used to relax muscles. The medicine treats pain associated with muscular injuries such as sprains and strains. The medication is used in conjunction with rest and physical therapy to treat the injury. Skelaxin is available in 800mg tablets taken orally several times a day. According to the Mayo Clinic, the medicine treats short-term injuries and is not meant for chronic pain. Along with the desired effects of the medicine, there may also be unwanted adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Skelaxin include alterations to the central nervous system: dizziness, drowsiness or irritability. According to the Mayo Clinic, the medication may also cause stomach distress, including nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. Skelaxin can also cause headaches and a rash that may or may not itch. These common adverse reactions are not usually serious and may decrease over time. If these side effects get worse or become bothersome, the physician may change the dose or change the medication.

Serious Side Effects

Skelaxin may cause damage to the liver. Signs of liver damage include a yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). Easy bruising and unusual bleeding are also signs of liver damage. According to RxList.com, the medication may cause a decrease in white blood cells. This opens up the possibility for an increase in infections while taking the medication. Skelaxin may also cause seizures and generalized weakness. All of these side effects need to be reported to the physician.

Precautions

Because the medication affects the central nervous system, causing dizziness and drowsiness, those taking Skelaxin need to be cautious. According to the Mayo Clinic, operating a car or other heavy machinery needs to be avoided until all the effects of the medication are understood. Using additional medications or drinking alcohol may increase these side effects.
