Calendula is derived from the marigold flower, and is often used as a topical treatment for a wide variety of skin ailments. It is also available as a homeopathic remedy, primarily used as a blood purifier. Calendula extract has antibiotic and anti-microbial properties. It is not only used for as a topical wound application, but can also be used as a mouth wash for gum disease, a soothing eye wash in ophthalmic conditions and to help resolve eczema. Calendula is considered safe to use with proper directions, but as with any substance, natural or otherwise, side effects may occur.
Topical Calendula Extract
Calendula is considered a safe product for use, and side effects are rare, advises PeaceHealth.com. There may be a skin rash in people who are allergic to calendula. Stop using the product if this occurs.
Homeopathic Preparations
In homeopathic preparation, calendula is used primarily to treat skin problems and relieve unhealthy discharges from wounds, according to homeopath William Boericke. When used under the direction of a qualified homeopath, it is considered safe with few side effects. If used inappropriately or in doses too high or frequent, homeopathic calendula can cause skin wounds to weep and ooze, aggravate erysipelas (streptococcal infections characterized by deep-red inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes) and inflame infected wounds. Homeopath Frans Vermeulen explains that calendula can cause pus in surgical wounds.
Liver
Jaundice has been reported in certain people with liver problems.
Stomach
Boericke notes that calendula has been shown to aggravate pre-existing heartburn, and cause nausea, vomiting and distention of the belly.
Cough
A deep cough with green-colored expectoration and hoarseness are other side effects of taking calendula in too high or frequent a dose.
Fever
Patients have experienced shuddering, chilliness, and sensitivity to dampness and cold air during a fever and after taking calendula.
Nose
Boericke reports that nasal congestion and discharge have been noted, with green mucus and plugged nostrils.
Allergic Reaction
If you experience breathing problems; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat; or a skin rash and hives, discontinue using this remedy, as you may be allergic to it.
