Skin Yeast Infection Symptoms

A yeast infection of the skin is called candidiasis or sometimes cutaneous candidiasis. Candidiasis is caused by a group of yeast species called candida, reports Merck.com. A skin yeast infection is sometimes called a fungal infection because yeast is a form of fungus. Men, women and children can contract a yeast infection on the skin. In babies, it's commonly referred to as diaper rash. Symptoms of skin yeast can be bothersome, but antifungal medication can relieve the discomfort in a few days.

Rash

A yeast infection of the skin can lead to a red rash or lesion. It can get larger over time or you may have more patches forming. The lesions can be difficult to see on darker skin tones, according to Merck.com. Typical locations of the lesions are the folds of the skin, genitals, trunk, buttocks and under the breasts, but they can occur anywhere on the skin.

Itching

The rash is often itchy. The National Institutes of Health indicates the itching can be moderate to intense. In addition to itching, the area can be sore or tender. Mild burning can accompany the itching, especially if the skin breaks open from scratching or irritation.

Other Signs

The hair follicles in the area of the candida rash can become infected and look like pimples, according to the NIH. Other physical signs may include raised red spots called papules, notes the NIH. A macule can also appear--a flat, distinct colored area of skin. Merck.com notes that the site can be crusted with yellowness and may ooze.
