Errin is one of the many brand names of a progestin oral contraceptive: "The Pill." It is a low-dose form of the medication known alternately as progestin-only pills or minipills. They stop the ovary's egg from developing fully, thus preventing pregnancy. Errin also thickens the mucus in the cervix, making it more difficult for male sperm to fertilize the egg. It is a prescription-only drug.
Serious Side Effects
Talk to your physician as soon as you can if you are affected by any serious side effects from taking the Errin contraceptive pill. According to the Mayo Clinic, the more common varieties of serious side effects from progestin contraceptives include an increase in the amount of bleeding during menstruation, lighter or heavier bleeding between periods or a total cessation of menstruation. Less common serious side effects include breast milk that is increased or unexpected, a rash on the skin or mental depression. There also have been other serious side effects reported, but the incidence is unknown. These effects include wheezing while breathing, a cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath, swallowing difficulties, tachycardia (increased heart rate), swelling or pain in the legs or arms that is not related to getting hurt, hives or itching, and swelling near the eyes or on the tongue or lips.
Temporary Side Effects
Since Errin essentially is affecting the way your reproductive system works, your body will need to get used to the drug. While this is happening, you may experience side effects from it that will disappear the more you use it. The more common of these include gaining weight, cramps in the abdomen, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, abnormal weakness, diarrhea, unusual tiredness, bodily fatigue, foot swelling, ankle swelling or facial swelling, dizziness, nausea, mood changes and a slight headache. Less common temporary side effects include insomnia, acne, decreased libido, tenderness or pain in the breasts, hair loss on the scalp, face or body, skin spots that are brown and bodily flushing, also known as hot flashes.
Withdrawal Side Effects
If you discontinue your use of Errin, there may be some side effects from your body's withdrawal from the medication. Your physician needs to know if you experience any of these. They include continual menstrual bleeding that is abnormal for you, cessation of menstruation or a delay in the time you expect to be fertile again.
