Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic comprised of semisynthetic amoxicillin and the B-lactamase inhibitor known as clavulanate potassium. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections such as lower respiratory tract infection, otitis media (ear infection), sinusitis and skin and urinary tract infections. If you have a sensitivity or allergy to penicillin you should not use this medication. It may cause a dangerous allergic reaction. Commonly reported side effects are usually mild and disappear once your course of treatment has ended.
Diarrhea
According to the manufacturer, 9 percent of users report diarrhea while taking augmentin. This is the most frequently reported side effect. The danger of prolonged diarrhea is dehydration. You may want to eat smaller meals more frequently, and avoid spicy foods to alleviate gastrointestinal distress. It is important to drink an adequate amount for fluids during this time. If diarrhea becomes severe, you should contact your physician.
Nausea and Vomiting
Approximately 3 percent of users report nausea while on this medication. Sticking to a bland diet and eating more frequently may help with nausea. Vomiting is reported in 1 percent of users. If you are experiencing severe nausea and vomiting you should speak to your physician; you may need to be placed on a different antibiotic.
Skin Rashes
Some users also report skin rashes, which may or may not itch. In the event that you develop a rash you should contact your provider. They may prescribe a medication to help diminish your rash and alleviate itching. If the rash is accompanied by swelling of the tongue or throat with difficulty breathing, you may be experiencing a severe allergic reaction and should seek medical attention immediately.
Vaginitis
Some women using augmentin may experience vaginitis. If you are using this medication and begin to experience itching, burning or increased discharge, you should see your gynecologist. If you do have vaginitis, there are medications that may be prescribed for treatment.
