Nexium (esomeprazole) is a medication used to manage symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition characterized by gastrointestinal ulcers and tumors. According to Drugs.com, Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes. Typically, you will take 20 or 40mg of Nexium once a day.
Common Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Nexium's common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain. Many bouts of diarrhea can cause you to suffer from low blood potassium levels and dehydration. Low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia) is characterized by constipation, muscle spasms and weakness. Add bananas, apricots, and other potassium-abundant fruits or vegetables into your daily diet. Manifestations of dehydration include dry lips, decreased urination and dry skin. Drink six to 10 glasses of water daily to replenish your fluids. Nexium can also cause gas (flatulence). Inform you physician when Nexium's common side effects remain for more than one week.
Serious Side Effects
MedlinePlus indicates that Nexium's serious side effects include skin peeling or blistering, trouble breathing and trouble swallowing (dysphagia). Trouble swallowing can cause you to choke on food and your own saliva. This can obstruct your airway and lead to death if these items are not removed. Nexium can also cause a rash, itching, hoarseness, and swelling of your feet, ankles, arms, hands and lower legs. Call your doctor immediately when you present with Nexium's serious side effects.
Additional Concerns
Avoid Nexium if you are allergic to esomeprazole or proton pump inhibitors in general. An allergic reaction to Nexium includes such symptoms as difficulty breathing, hives, and facial, throat or tongue swelling. Combining Nexium with amoxicillin can lead to pseudomembranous colitis, says the National Library of Medicine. This is a condition in which you develop foul-smelling diarrhea, stomach cramping and nausea. Drugs.com says that it is important to tell your doctor if you are taking clopidogrel, digoxin, diazepam, atazanavir, iron or warfarin. Your doctor may have to adjust Nexium's dosage.
