Static hair causes unwanted fly-aways and is difficult to style, especially during the dry winter months. The condition is caused by wind, decreased humidity and low temperatures, which cause negative ions to build up on the hair shaft according to Real Simple. The individual hairs on the scalp repel or move away from each other. Use simple at-home solutions to remove static from your hair.
Step 1
Shampoo hair with a moisturizing or hydrating shampoo. Use a conditioner after shampooing. Apply the conditioner throughout you hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to distribute moisture to the hair and scalp. Look for conditioners made for dry hair or labeled as moisturizing. Rinse conditioner in cool or lukewarm water. Opt for leave-in conditioners which add moisture to hair throughout the day.
Step 2
Spray a static release spray onto your clothing before getting dressed. Immediately before combing your hair, add a light coat of static release spray to your comb or brush. Carry an extra can in your car or purse for emergency situations.
Step 3
Shampoo your hair every two or three days. Excess washing can cause hair to dry out. Use a dry spray-in shampoo and simply touch up roots to remove excess oil instead of an allover washing.
Step 4
Avoid drying your hair with a blow dryer, and allow it to air dry, whenever possible. Avoid using heated hair appliances such as curling irons, straightening irons or other devices daily. Cosmopolitian suggests using tourmaline or ionic hair dryers instead of traditional blow dryers.
Step 5
Rub dryer sheets on your clothing and on your hair to decrease static buildup. Simply wipe the sheet in your hair to remove the electric charge.
Step 6
Hang damp clothes on an indoor laundry line when still damp. Drying clothes completely in the dryer can increase static.
