OIly hair isn't usually a serious condition, but it can be annoying. MotherNature.com suggests the oil could be due to having too much hair. Fine hair tends to grow more hairs per square inch of scalp, which means more oil-producing glands exist. The sebaceous glands that reside at the base of each hair shaft produce sebum, or fatty oil into the hair. Curing oily hair for life isn't feasible, but implementing a daily hair care routine to reduce the discomfort is possible.

Step 1

Wash your hair with a clear shampoo. MotherNature.com explains that clear cleansing products have fewer ingredients than other shampoos, leaving less residue. Don't be afraid to use a generous amount of shampoo and even repeat the application each time you shower. Rinse the product out thoroughly.

Step 2

Use conditioner. CNN.com recommends conditioning even oily hair. Select a product based on how your hair responds to it. Good choices of conditioner are those that are oil-free. Apply the conditioner to the hair, concentrating on the strands instead of the scalp. Rinse thoroughly. If you find the conditioner leaves a waxy residue even after rinsing, you may want to try another product that is specially formulated for oily hair.

Step 3

Mix equal parts witch hazel and antiseptic mouthwash. Apply the solution to a cotton ball and dab the scalp before styling your hair normally. This astringent can help slow oil production.

Step 4

Brush your hair only when necessary. Begin at the base of the hair. MotherNature.com suggests brushing at the scalp first can carry the oil throughout the hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid touching your hair with your hands or rubbing your scalp throughout the day. Apply other acidic products to the hair if other techniques don't work. Try beer, fresh lemon or apple cider vinegar as a rinse to reduce oil.
