What Is a Holistic Doctor?

A holistic physician is an M.D. who integrates conventional and alternative therapies to treat a patient on all levels. By treating body, mind and spirit, the physician heals all aspects of the disease, not just the symptoms.

Joint Effort

The doctor and patient work together to find solutions and remedies that are suitable for that person. The patient's views and concerns are taken into consideration, and any treatment is agreed upon by both parties.

Body, Mind and Spirit

The doctor treats the patient in her entirety. Body, mind and spirit are addressed individually and as a whole. All aspects of disease and treatment are considered. It's the doctor's responsibility to educate the patient on the disease, cause and any treatment that is suggested.

Focus on the Cause

Holistic doctors focus on the cause of disease. They look at the disease itself, the patient and his lifestyle to try and find possible causes for the disease. By finding and eliminating the cause with alternative and conventional therapies, they drastically reduce the chance of a recurrence.

Conventional vs. Alternative

There is no competition between conventional and alternative therapies in holistic medicine. Each is used in ways to best benefit the patient. One therapy is not chosen over another but is chosen to complement and increase the benefit of another.

Requirements

A holistic medical doctor has earned a post-graduate degree and completed her residency in either conventional medicine (M. D.) or osteopathic medicine (D.O). She also must have extensive education in one or more alternative therapies such as, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbalism or therapeutic body work.
