How to Get Rid of Pimple Spots

Pimples, also called acne, can occur at any age, although the spots are more common in teenagers. Approximately 85 percent of people in the 12- to 24-year-old age group are affected by pimples, according to the Acne Global Alliance. While there is no proven way to make a pimple disappear overnight, there are a few steps you can take to help your existing spots fade faster and prevent new pimples from erupting on your face.

Step 1

Try a home remedy to dry up your pimples. Apply a dab of egg white to your pimples or mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 2 tbsp. of warm water and apply the paste to your face. Allow the egg whites or baking soda paste to dry on your face for 20 minutes and then remove with water. Using these methods may encourage your pimples to dry out, causing the top layer to gradually peel away.

Step 2

Use a mild facial cleanser formulated for treating acne. Using harsh soap can actually irritate the skin and cause more pimples.

Step 3

Buy an over-the-counter pimple cream, ointment or pads at the drug store or grocery store. Look for products that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic has a drying effect on pimples and benzoyl peroxide reduces the swollen appearance of your pimples and kills bacteria that can cause acne.

Step 4

Talk to your doctor about using prescription medication if over-the-counter medications fail to help your acne improve. Prescription gels or creams that contain retinoids can be used to help the pimple dry out more quickly, although these medications may irritate the sensitive skin of the face.

Step 5

Try oral medications if you have severe acne. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to relieve inflammation and reduce bacteria on your face, or she may prescribe a more powerful drug called isotretinoin. Isoretinoin is used for severe acne that has not responded to other treatments. The drug can cause birth defects, and women taking isoretinoin should use a reliable form of birth control while using the drug, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Tips and Warnings

  • Acne can occur when your pores and hair follicles become plugged with oil. You can reduce the oil on your skin by washing your face at least once a day and keeping your hair away from your face. Make sure sunscreen, lotion and make up are labeled "oil-free." Products containing oil can lead to more pimples. Remove makeup before you go to bed to reduce clogged pores.
  • When trying a new pimple medication, use a small amount the first time. Medications can be harsh on your skin, and testing a small amount will allow you to change medications if you notice redness, burning or irritation.
