Airborne Allergy Symptoms

Specific substances can cause an allergic reaction in people whose bodies treat the agents like foreign intruders. Airborne allergens can enter the body through the nose and mouth, then move on to the lungs and wreak havoc. An allergic reaction to such agents is the result of the immune system producing antibodies to protect the body. This in turn triggers the release of histamines and other substances that cause the allergic symptoms, explains the Mayo Clinic. Common airborne allergy agents include dust mites, pollen, molds, pet dander and cockroaches, states KidsHealth.org.

Nasal Problems

The allergen can enter the nasal passages and cause sneezing, runny nose or congestion. This can be the result of the particle itself or the histamines produced from the body's response to the particle. Inflammation occurs inside the nasal passageways, leading to congestion.

Itching

The eyes, nose and/or throat may become itchy. This can lead to watery red eyes, sore throat, coughing, hoarse voice or a feeling of something in the eye even when nothing is present, states eMedTV.com. These symptoms can be persistent and can occur even after the slightest contact with the allergen.

Swelling

The eyes and throat can become inflamed and swell from the allergens. Even the whites of the eyes can swell, which is known as conjunctivitis, states eMedTV.com.

Sinus Symptoms

The tissue below the eyes can turn blue from the discomfort. Sinus headaches and pain or popping in the ears can result from the buildup of mucus and inflammation. Excess mucus can begin draining out of the nose or down the back of the throat. Many of these symptoms can lead to a diagnosis of sinusitis, states eMedTV.com.

Other Symptoms

Asthmatics can have worsened attacks or individuals who normally don't have asthma can develop similar symptoms when airborne allergens enter their system. This can produce wheezing and shortness of breath. Some people may develop skin problems from the exposure to the allergens.
