Side Effects of the Medication Zonegran

Zonegran, the brand name for zonisamide, is a medication used to treat seizures, particularly partial epileptic seizures, which are a type that affects an area of the brain that allows the person to remain conscious during the episode. This anticonvulsant medication, used in combination with other drugs, is available by prescription. According to the Mayo Clinic, the medication comes as a tablet or as a capsule, but along with the desired effects, Zonegran may cause adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Zonegran include headaches, a loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The person may experience a withdrawal from previous interests, dizziness, agitation and depression. Insomnia, dry mouth, confusion, double vision and drowsiness may also occur. Additionally, numbness, tingling or burning sensations in the hands and feet may occur. Report any bothersome side effects to the doctor. If the adverse reactions do not go away, the doctor may choose to stop the medication.

Serious Side Effects

Some side effects associated with Zonegran are more serious than others. These symptoms need to be brought to the attention of the doctor as soon as possible. The medication may cause a worsening of the seizures. A rash, blistering or peeling of the skin needs further evaluation. Zonegran can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever, chills, sore throat and cough. Sudden back pain, pain when urinating, discolored urine signify damage to the kidneys. Unusual bleeding or bruising signifies damage to the liver. Zonegran may also cause the individual to experience difficulty speaking, concentrating, coordinating movement and difficulty walking. Severe weakness or muscle pain may occur with use.
Also, an allergic reaction to the medication is possible. Signs of an allergy to Zonegran include, but are not limited to difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or airway; and an increased heart rate. If any signs of an allergy occur, seek immediate medical attention.

Overdose Symptoms

According to the Mayo Clinic, some side effects of Zonegran indicate an overdose of the medication. These symptoms include feelings of fainting or a decreased level of consciousness; the person may also experience difficulty breathing and may struggle to breathe normally. The heart rate may slow down or beat irregularly. These symptoms signify an immediate need to seek medical attention.
