Stalevo 100 is a combination of entacapone, carbidopa and levodopa used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. This disease of the central nervous system causes your body to shake and move uncontrollably. Levodopa is a substance that helps sufferers of the disease by keeping more active stores of dopamine in the brain. This substance helps you control how you talk and walk, among other things. The entacapone component of the drug helps make levodopa remain active longer, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Serious Side Effects
The three drugs in Stalevo 100 may cause some serious side effects in Parkinson's disease sufferers. The most common of these, according to the Mayo Clinic, come from entacapone. These include repeated motions of the legs, arms, face, lips and tongue. These can include twisting and twitching. Other serious side effects are derived from levodopa by itself or in combination with carbidopa. While these have been reported by Parkinson's disease patients, the incidence of occurrence is unknown, the Mayo Clinic says. These may include vomiting (may include blood), bodily pain, uncommon tiredness, ankle and knee pain, uncommon bodily weakness, urination pain or difficulties, abnormal bruising, skin paleness, trembling, red spots, gland swelling, seizures, restlessness, a walk or gait that is shuffling, mental alterations that are severe, pain in the stomach that is severe and shortness of breath. Others include getting a new mole, nausea, drooling, speaking difficulties, a cough, sensory or visual hallucinations, eyelid drooping, inability to control the bladder, auditory hallucinations, breathing difficulties, appetite loss, gum bleeding, eyes sticking in one position, constipation, tar-like feces, pupils that are constricted and blue color to the skin. Stalevo 100 also may affect your heart rate making it faster (tachycardia) or irregular (arrhythmia). Tell your doctor about any serious side effects you experience.
Entacapone Temporary Side Effects
Entacapone also may cause some temporary side effects that are relatively common. These should disappear as you acclimate to Stalevo 100. The more common of these side effects, according to the Mayo Clinic, are discoloration of the urine, a decrease in (or absence of) bodily motion, dizziness and diarrhea. Less common temporary side effects include an acidic stomach, wheezing when breathing, anxiety, insomnia, bacteriological infections, belching, swelling in the tongue or mouth, abnormal taste that may be sour or bitter, restlessness, bodily discomfort and flatulence. Others may include fear, hyperventilation, irritability, nervousness and indigestion.
Levodopa and Carbidopa Temporary Side Effects
There are many potential temporary side effects from the carbidopa/levodopa combination or from levodopa alone. The incidence of occurrence is not known. These, too, should pass on their own as you take Stalevo 100 more. They include memory problems, abnormal breathing, empty or sad feelings, pain in the bladder, bodily warmth, vision blurring, faintness, mental confusion and darkened sweat. Others may include gaining or losing weight, speech problems, penis erections that are prolonged or painful, voice loss, lockjaw, appetite loss, hiccups and nightmares among many others. Tell your doctor if these continue.
