How to Manage Oily Hair

Oily hair can leave you looking and feeling less than your best. Although this annoying, confidence-stealing occurrence may seem to be an inevitable part of life, there are things that you can begin to do today to manage your oily hair without breaking your bank account. Choose different oily hair management methods that you can easily and consistently incorporate into your existing hair care regimen, and note how your hair reacts to each individual treatment. Over time, it should become easier to manage, and possibly eradicate, your oily hair problem.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair at least once every day using a clear shampoo. Clear shampoos remove oil out of hair without leaving excess residue behind.. If you live in a humid environment, you may need to shampoo your hair twice a day, states dermatologist Dr. Lowell Goldsmith. Let the shampoo sit on your hair for at least five minutes, then rinse out and repeat. Dr. Goldsmith states that the double shampoo method will not harm your scalp or hair.

Step 2

Apply an oil-free conditioner to your hair ends only. Conditioner applied to your roots will weigh hair down and cause it to flatten out over the course of the day, which may initiate more oily hair build-up.

Step 3

Use baby powder to absorb the oil from your scalp and hair when you are unable to wash it. Apply the baby powder liberally to your hair and scalp, and wipe it off with a dry towel.

Step 4

Color your hair. Coloring your hair enlarges each individual strand, which in turn reduces the oil that is spread throughout your hair.

Step 5

Highlight your hair. Highlighting hair dyes slightly dries out hair strands.

Step 6

Make a homemade astringent to slow down hair oil secretion. Mix equal parts of mouthwash with witch hazel in a small container. Use a cotton ball to apply the mixture to your scalp only.

Step 7

Use a lemon-distilled water solution to reduce hair oiliness, states David Daines, owner of David Daines Salon in New York. Add the juice of 2 lemons to 1 qt. of distilled water. Rinse your hair with the solution after you have shampooed and rinsed your hair.

Step 8

Use a folk remedy for oil reduction. Mix approximately 1/2 tsp. of fresh aloe vera juice with 1 tbsp. of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add the mixture to about 1/4 cup of your normal shampoo and wash as usual. Store any leftover ingredients in your refrigerator for up to a week.

Tips and Warnings

  • See your doctor or gynecologist to determine if your birth control pills are causing your oily hair problem.
  • Do not over-brush your hair. Over-brushing causes oil from the roots of your hair to be redistributed to the ends of your hair, states Dr. Goldsmith.
