Negative Side Effects of Tylenol

Tylenol, also known generically as acetaminophen, is one of the most commonly taken over-the-counter medications. Doctors recommend it to reduce fever and pain. For most people who take Tylenol, the drug has no side effects and is considered very safe. However, for some people who take Tylenol, the rare side effects can be serious and even life-threatening. Pay attention to any side effects you notice after taking Tylenol and call your doctor right away if you experience these side effects.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions to Tylenol are rare but possible. A skin rash, hives or increased itching can all be caused by an allergic reaction to Tylenol. Other symptoms of an allergic reaction to Tylenol are trouble breathing and severe dizziness. If you know you have an allergy to Tylenol, tell your doctor before taking any Tylenol. If you decide to take this medicine, pay attention to early side effects to avoid a life-threatening situation. Stop taking the Tylenol and call your doctor right away.

Liver Toxicity

Some patients experience liver damage from unknowingly taking too much Tylenol or from taking Tylenol with existing liver problems. When either of these situations happen, the liver cannot properly process Tylenol and the medication becomes toxic to the liver. Initially, you may experience nausea and vomiting. You may also notice extreme fatigue or feel like you have the flu. As the liver becomes more damaged, your liver can fail, causing a coma or even death.

Jaundice

Damage to your liver can show signs of jaundice such as skin or eye yellowing. Pay attention to any signs that your liver reacts negatively to Tylenol. If you notice any yellowing of your skin and eyes after taking Tylenol, stop taking the medication and seek immediate emergency care. Prevent jaundice by telling your doctor if you have prior liver damage, drink regularly or have active alcoholism before taking Tylenol. Remember that alcohol makes your liver more susceptible to damage from Tylenol.

Bleeding and Bruising

Tylenol can affect your blood system and can cause anemia if used for an extended period of time. These blood conditions can lead to unexplained bleeding and bruising. To prevent these side effects, avoid taking Tylenol for more than 10 days for adults and five days for children.

Urine Changes

Watch for blood in your urine, or painful, decreased or frequent urination while taking Tylenol. Before taking any Tylenol, make sure to tell your doctor if you have any liver or kidney problems. Since these symptoms signal a liver or kidneys in distress, call your doctor right away and get immediate treatment for these negative side effects of Tylenol.
