Oprah Winfrey aired a television show in October 2008 that featured Dr. Nicolas Perricone. Dr. Perricone discussed his list of 10 superfoods that promote optimum health and anti-aging. The acai berry was the number-one superfood on his list. Since then, the popularity of the acai berry diet has soared.

Identification

The acai berry fruit is a tart, purple berry that resembles a grape and grows on trees that are as tall as 60 feet in the Brazilian rain forest. To follow the acai berry diet, you can purchase a form and flavor of acai berry that you like best. Acai berry is now available in supplement form, either as a capsule, liquid or frozen berry puree. Manufacturers that produce acai berry supplements include Natrol, Sambazon and Garden Greens. You can find these particular supplement brands online through stores like Walgreens and GNC or at their retail store locations.

Time Frame

If you use the Garden Greens formula of acai berry, you should take an acai berry supplement capsule twice a day. Take the supplement in the morning and afternoon accompanied by a full glass of water both times. Take two capsules every time you take a dose of the acai berry supplement.

Considerations

You should eat three meals each day when doing the acai berry diet. Decrease the number of calories that you consume at every meal. Begin by cutting out 200 calories from your usual diet and slowly increase this number. You can take the shake form of acai berry as a snack between your meals to help curb your appetite.

Prevention/Solution

You should avoid eating high sugar and high fat food items while you are on the acai berry diet. Eliminate processed meals, fried and fast foods and sweets. Your fats should come only from healthy sources like salmon, olive oil, tuna, nuts and herring. You should eat mostly lean meat cuts (tuna, white chicken and salmon), whole grain breads, healthy greens and lots of fruits. Drink mostly water and reduce the amount of caffeinated drinks you consume. Continue on the diet until you reach your ideal weight.

Misconceptions

Many different acai berry diet supplements have been advertised on the Internet. These advertisers lead many people to believe that Oprah endorsed the acai berry for weight loss on her show, when in fact the weight loss benefit of acai berry was not even mentioned by Dr. Perricone on the show. Marketers also wrongly claim that the acai berry can increase your libido and cleanse your colon.
