Skin and hair are sensitive parts of the body that are easily damaged if not cared for correctly. It is not enough to just care for skin and hair topically with treatments and products. Overall health of skin and hair begins with what you put into your body. A proper diet for healthy skin and hair in conjunction with appropriate external care will give you the desired long-term results.
Antioxidants
On a daily basis people are exposed free radicals in the environment such as pollution, smoke, sun and other chemicals that cannot be avoided. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons. This makes them highly reactive byproducts that cause oxidation of cells. Antioxidants are the free radical fighters and blockers we need to protect the skin and hair from damage. Antioxidants are found in various deep-colored fruits and vegetables such as berries, tomatoes and green leafy vegetables. People who suffer from high stress should eat extra servings of these fruits and vegetables as well as 1/4 cup of nuts per day.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that are necessary for soft and smooth skin and hair. A lack of this fatty acid can lead to dull, flaky skin and even hair loss. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in a variety of supplements as well as foods including flaxseeds, fish and the popular beauty supplement Evening Primrose oil. Aside from supporting healthy hair growth and the prevention of premature skin aging, omega-3 fatty acids promote heart health and proper brain function.
Fiber
The recommended daily amount of fiber is 25 to 30 grams. An increase in fiber can help rectify problem skin. Fiber helps to eliminate toxins in the body that cause skin problems. This also applies to dandruff prone scalps.
Water
Water is one of the most important parts of skin and hair care. Water flushes out of the body toxins that can be damaging to the appearance of skin and texture of hair. Water also hydrates the body from the inside out to prevent skin dryness and brittle hair. Drink at least eight glasses of water per day, and if skin and hair appear to need more help, increase your daily water intake to 10 to 12 glasses per day.
Omissions
Certain substances will indefinitely cause adverse effects on the skin and hair. Among these are excessive use of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, refined junk food, "white" products such as breads and saturated fats. These foods and products cause skin and hair problems including breakouts, dandruff, wrinkles and thinning hair.
