How to Get Rid of Fat on the Upper Tummy

Through a combination of diet and targeted exercise, you can get rid of upper tummy fat. Fat buildup in the upper abdominal area is equally common in both men and women. Changing your lifestyle can help you get rid of fat in all parts of your body, including the abdominal area. Before you start a new diet and exercise program, you should speak to your doctor.

Step 1

Follow a reduced calorie diet. Cutting the number of calories you consume can help you drop weight. Eating 500 to 1000 fewer calories per day can help you lose belly fat. To track your caloric intake, write in a journal the calorie content of each food item that you eat.

Step 2

Avoid foods high in saturated fat. Steer clear of fried foods, fast food and sweets. Limit alcohol in your diet as well since this can lead to belly fat. According to the Abs Diet, there are certain foods you can consume to slim the belly. These foods include nuts, eggs, green leafy vegetables, berries, olive oil, turkey, fish and chicken. The Abs Diet is a six-week eating plan developed by the editor-in-chief of Men's Health, David Zinczenko.

Step 3

Perform 30 minutes to an hour of aerobic exercise per day. Perform activities that work out the upper abdominal muscles. Some examples are rowing, stair climbing and kickboxing.

Step 4

Target the upper abdominal area with strength-training exercises. Crunches focus on the upper abs and can help you build muscle in the area. To do crunches, lie flat on your back with your knees bent. Lift your shoulders off the ground while contracting your abs. Abdominal twists are another exercise you can do to get rid of belly fat. While standing, keep your legs stationary and shoulder width apart, and with your arms raised, twist your body from side to side. Repeat the exercises 10 to 20 times. Do two to three sets of each exercise.
