How to Prevent Oily Hair

Oily hair can be caused by a number of environmental issues as well as natural bodily functions. Hormones are one of the main cause of oily hair. Puberty, pregnancy and menopause are the most common times when the head's sebaceous glands produce excessive amounts of sebum, or oil. The purpose of hair's natural oils is to keep the hair protected from moisture and heat, although some people tend to produce more sebum than normal. Excess heat can also cause oil glands to produce large amounts of oil. Styling products and air pollution can worsen the problem.

Step 1

Wash your hair thoroughly daily or every other day. Opt for a shampoo specifically designed for oily hair and apply conditioner to the ends of hair only.

Step 2

Avoid excessive heat such as high heat blow-drying. Use a low heat setting to dry hair. High heat triggers oil production.

Step 3

Limit the use of styling products. Styling products such as gels and lotions can add greasiness to the hair and bring out excess natural oils. Use styling products that are oil-free to minimize greasiness.

Step 4

Apply a rinse made of 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1/3 cup of your regular shampoo. The lemon will absorb excess oil. Massage about a tablespoon of the mixture into the scalp for one minute, then rinse with warm water. Warm water has a drying effect on hair as well.

Step 5

Avoid brushing the hair too often. Brushing brings oil to the ends of the hair, leaving a trail of oil on the hair shaft. Brush once or twice daily only.
