How the Skin Detoxifies
The skin is the body's largest organ. It helps the body control body temperature. When we become hot, the body's sweat glands release waste products and cool the body.
Detoxification occurs through a process of toxins and waste being released through the skin's pores to the surface during perspiration. Heavy metals, for example, can be excreted in a sauna where the heat encourages perspiration.
Dry Brushing to Detox Skin
Dry brushing is one way to encourage skin detoxification and has been done in spas for many years in Europe and in the U.S. Using a natural bristle boar brush, lightly brush your skin before you shower. Doing so will slough off dead skin cells and help activate your lymphatic system that moves toxins out of the body.
Brush from the feet and hands to the chest. The idea is to brush towards the heart. Use a finer, softer natural bristle brush to dry brush the face.
Soak in an Epsom Salt, Baking Soda Bath to Detox Skin
Soaking in an Epsom salt and baking soda solution can help your skin detoxify. Add one cup each of Epsom salt and baking soda to a hot bath and soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Add a half cup of grated ginger in a cheesecloth and suspend in the water. The website Body Detox Diet says the salt will help draw out the toxins and the baking soda to neutralize them.
Always hydrate properly after perspiring in a sauna or hot bath.
