Tartrazine, or FD&C Yellow No. 5, is an additive in some foods to create color. eMedTV.com notes that some people have reported negative reactions to the additive. Tartrazine, like other color additives, goes through a safety approval process. The allergic responses to the additive are noted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Symptoms have been minor, according to eMedTV.com, but if you experience more serious symptoms, see medical attention.
Skin Reaction
Hives or itching can develop after consumption or exposure to tartrazine. Monitor these reactions, but avoiding the additive is the best course of action. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) argues that the connection between the reported skin reactions and the food additive tartrazine was established without proper research.
Anaphylaxis
The AAFA reports that anaphylaxis is a serious sign of allergy. This type of reaction has not been reported specifically with tartrazine but it is possible and has occurred with other additives. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include trouble breathing, swelling of the throat, mouth, lips and face in addition to a drop in blood pressure that can cause fainting. You may experience excessive sweating, paleness, panting, nausea, elevated pulse rate and confusion, notes the AAFA. Without emergency treatment anaphylaxis can result in death.
Asthma Complications
The AAFA points out that asthma attacks have been attributed to the consumption or exposure to tartrazine, but it considers this reaction to be unlikely. Although the reaction is unlikely, it is still possible and you should report it to your doctor if you're concerned.
