Symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the Neck

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of bone and cartilage in a joint that can cause significant symptoms over time. In the neck, osteoarthritis generally develops after years of wear and tear. In addition to wear and tear, osteoarthritis in the neck is caused by poor posture, increased neck strain from certain jobs and from increased trauma in sports such as football. Most cases of osteoarthritis in the neck are treated with rest, alternating heat and cold therapy, over-the-counter pain medications, injection of medications into the neck and stretching and strengthening of neck muscles, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, intense physical therapy or surgery may be necessary in severe cases. You should alert your doctor if you have symptoms of osteoarthritis in the neck.

Neck Pain

Neck pain is the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis in the neck, according to the Mayo Clinic. This pain may extend from the bottom of your skull to the upper part of your back. It is usually dull in nature but can be sharp with quick neck movements. This occurs because the cartilage between the bones in your neck have worn down and do not provide protection against movement. Therefore, these bones rub against each other and cause neck pain. See your doctor once you begin to notice neck pain. There may be exercises or treatments to slow the progression of osteoarthritis in your neck. If your pain is severe, you should not hesitate to see your doctor.

Numbness and Weakness

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) states that numbness and weakness in the arms, hands and fingers are common symptoms of osteoarthritis in the neck. The weakness in your arms and hands can prevent you from adequately performing daily tasks if severe. This occurs because bones in the neck lose their smooth surface, become rough and push on the nerves that enter and exit the neck. Surgery may be indicated when these symptoms are severe. See your doctor for consultation and proper diagnosis of these symptoms.

Grinding and Popping

Grinding and popping when moving your neck are common symptoms of osteoarthritis in the neck, according to the AAOS. This occurs because the rough surfaces caused by osteoarthritis rub against each other to create these symptoms. These are usually symptoms of more advanced osteoarthritis and surgery may be necessary. Seek proper diagnosis and treatment from your doctor.
