Eyeliner enhances both the beauty and definition of eyes, and permanent eyeliner gives you defined eyes without the hassle of everyday application. You can choose to have a soft, hazy look or go for a bold, dark defined look. Do your research to find a qualified professional who can perform the delicate procedure. Evaluate the benefits and risks associated with the method before making your decision.
Procedure
The procedure is either performed by a medical professional or by a technician trained in tattooing permanent make up. After assessing what color and shape will best suit your features, a hand-held device is used to embed an organic pigment into the dermal layer of your skin. Topical anesthetic is used to numb your skin and the entire procedure can take up to two hours. A follow-up appointment is required four to six weeks after the procedure.
Cost
The cost of permanent eyeliner varies among states and the type of treatment you choose. You can choose to have only top eyeliner applied (above the upper eyelashes) or bottom (above the lower eyelashes) or have for both done. You should expect to pay approximately $400 to $800 for a full treatment, including a post-treatment appointment.
Benefits
Permanent eyeliner offers the advantage of not having to constantly apply and re-apply eyeliner, saving time and money. If you're allergic to the chemicals in eyeliner, are inept at applying it correctly or lead an active lifestyle and don't want it to smudge, then permanent eyeliner may be solution for you. Permanent eyeliner works well for people who have unsteady hands due to medical conditions, like arthritis or Parkinson's disease, or to those who have visual impairments.
Drawbacks
Once applied, permanent eyeliner is there for good, which doesn't allow you the flexibility or option of changing your eyeliner design if you get bored or it becomes outdated. There are also many health risks associated with it. You may develop keloids, which develop from the excessive growth of scar tissue. You may have an allergic reaction to the pigment, anesthesia or antibiotic ointment. If unsterile equipment is used, you run the risk of contracting an infectious disease, like hepatitis or HIV. You may suffer from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is darkening of the skin
Removal
If you were the victim of an untrained technician or you simply decide to have your permanent eyeliner removed, you can have it removed by a q-switched laser, which is designed for tattoo removal. Multiple treatments are required; one or two treatments if you wish to lighten the eyeliner and three to four treatments for complete removal.
