There are many over-the-counter acne products on the market, each type formulated to treat this common skin condition effectively. As a consumer, you need to be able to choose products based upon your skin's special needs and identify the product ingredients that will best meet those needs. Then you can choose the best products for your personal acne care.
Soap
Most facial soaps contain harsh chemical ingredients such as perfumes and dyes that can irritate your skin. This can lead to more inflammation and more breakouts. The best over-the-counter soaps are designed for sensitive skin and will indicate so on the package. To use a sensitive skin soap, wet your skin and lather your face well with the soap. Gently spread the soap around, then rinse it off well with water. Avoid scrubbing your skin, which can cause irritation and worsen acne breakouts. Wash your skin gently twice per day, morning and night.
Benzoyl Peroxide Cream
Benzoyl peroxide cream is one of the most effective and fastest working over-the-counter acne fighters available. It can be purchased in 2.5, 5 and 10 percent concentrations. While it seems reasonable to use the highest concentration benzoyl peroxide cream, this can actually cause your skin to become highly irritated and can sometimes cause a mild chemical burn. Begin by using only the lowest strength benzoyl peroxide cream, no higher than 2.5 percent. Spread a pea-sized amount onto your skin twice per day, gently massaging it in until it has been absorbed. Avoid applying benzoyl peroxide cream to the delicate skin around your eyes, which can be too thin and sensitive for such as powerful acne-fighting cream.
Oil-Free Lotion for Sensitive Skin
One highly effective over-the-counter product that many people with acne neglect to use is an oil-free moisturizing lotion for sensitive skin types. Benzoyl peroxide and other products can be drying on your skin, even if the lowest strengths are used. Using an oil-free lotion that is formulated for sensitive skin will ensure that your skin will be clear as well as soft and supple. An oil-free lotion for sensitive skin will not contain pore-clogging or skin irritating ingredients. Spread a dime-size amount onto your skin twice per day after using a benzoyl peroxide cream. Avoid rubbing the lotion in too aggressively, which can cause irritation.
