Every day, glands in your nose and throat produce mucus, approximately one to two quarts, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. While this mucus is generally swallowed without regard, individuals with post-nasal drip may experience the sensation of dripping in the back of the nose or the feeling of mucus accumulation, caused by the common cold, allergies, a deviated septum or other structural abnormalities.
Antihistamines
When post-nasal drip results from a cold, flu or allergies, secretions in the nasal passage may become abnormally thin. Antihistamines work by blocking the action of histamine, the chemical that causes cold symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, itching and post-nasal drip. Over-the-counter antihistamines include brand names Benadryl and Claritin.
Decongestants
Decongestant medications are used to shrink the blood vessels in the nasal membranes, clearing the nose for better breathing and relief of cold-related symptoms including post-nasal drip. Decongestants are in various forms, including syrups, pills and nasal sprays. Nasal sprays are effective at providing immediate relief, without side effects common in other decongestants, such as nervous or jittery feelings. However, these medications should not be used for periods exceeding three days, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
Antibiotics
Post-nasal drip may be the result of a sinus infection, which generally requires antibiotics to relieve the irritation and destroy the bacteria responsible for the infection. Signs of a sinus infection include thick, yellowish or green mucus. See your doctor if you suspect a sinus infection.
Surgery
Structural abnormalities of the nose, such as a deviated septum (a displaced nasal septum) may cause post-nasal drip. The displacement hinders the flow of air and mucus through the nose. The AARP maintains the definitive treatment for this condition is surgical repositioning, though antihistamines, decongestants and other medications may offer temporary relief.
