Some people have allergies to wheat and other grains that contain gluten, a protein found in certain grains that contributes to the elasticity of those grains during the baking process. If you're allergic to grains, your body may produce antibodies in an attempt to protect itself. Various symptoms to grain allergies may appear, some immediately, and others days later. It's important to learn to recognize gluten allergy symptoms so you can avoid the foods that cause the sensitivity in your system.

Head and Mental Issues

Headaches after eating gluten-containing grains are common allergy symptoms, says Wheat Free.org. Fatigue and lethargy, dizziness and fainting have also been noted. Mood changes and depression are also possible symptoms after ingesting wheat and other grains containing gluten.

Joint and Muscle Stiffness and Pain

Allergized.com mentions that some people experience significant joint pain accompanied by aching of muscle stiffness taking the form of arthritis.

Skin Affectations

The Mayo Clinic and Merck websites point out possible skin affectations that have been reported as a result of grain allergies such as itching, hives, irritation, rash and swelling in red patches. Eczema has also been reported.

Breathing Problems

The Merck website Science in Africa says breathing problems such as sneezing and discharge, asthma, and nasal congestion may be symptoms from wheat allergies.

Digestive, Mouth and Throat Issues

Abdominal cramping with possible nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may appear after eating wheat and other gluten-containing grains such as barley and rye, according to Allergized.com. Severe, possible life-threatening reactions to grain may take the form of swelling of the lips, tongue and throat, accompanied by itching and anaphylaxis, reports the Mayo Clinic.

Whole Body Temperature Sensitivity

Some sensitive people may experience reactions to ingested grains after becoming overheated during exercise or a hot shower, says the Allergized website. Various skin reactions have been seen, including redness and swelling. Exposure to cold weather may bring out symptoms to grain allergies on the face, neck and hands.
