Investing in a pair of quality athletic walking shoes is important for reducing your risk of injury as well as offering comfort during your workout. Purchasing shoes that offer a good, snug fit, full support, adequate cushioning and toe space are all important considerations. Cushioning may be the most crucial and integral in your selection, since it is responsible for absorbing shock and impacts wearability.

Cushioned Shoes are Best For...

Cushioned athletic walking shoes generally have the softest midsoles, the greatest flexibility, but the least amount of overall support. So, who should choose cushioned shoes? Cushioned walking shoes work best for individuals who do not overpronate (arches collapse a little) or need extra support. Often those with higher arches or even individuals that tend to underpronate slightly (roll outward on the sides of the feet) do best in these shoes. According to Johanna Bjorken, footwear buyer for JackRabbit Sports in New York City, having rigid arches that don't collapse (flatten out) when you step calls for extra cushioning as well.

Best Low to Mid-Priced Walking Shoes

New Balance 557 walking shoes are an inexpensive, quality shoe for both men and women, according to a recent walking shoe comparison report published by Consumer Reports. They are flexible, lightweight and offer cushioning (especially in the heel) most beneficial for frequent moderate-paced fitness walking. The mesh upper is breathable for cool feet, and they have durable outsoles and optimum stability (without being stiff). Saucony's Grid Instep RT walking shoes are best known for providing optimum comfort and cushioning. They feel like you're wearing slippers. Additionally, they are lightweight, attractive and versatile, offering a snug (but not too tight) fit. Both of these shoes can be purchased for less than $60.

Best Mid to High-Priced Walking Shoes

The Asics GEL-Fluent LV walking shoe was voted a top pick by the editors of Fitness magazine (2009). Besides being an attractive walking shoe, these received kudos for optimum cushioning, especially in the heel, as well as a flexible outsole that helps direct your foot forward as you stride, helping to prevent injury (retail for $85). Additionally, they are lightweight and offer a mesh upper for cooler feet. For men, the Brooks Synergy 2 offers strong support and cushioning inside and a soft, full-grain leather outer that comfortably wraps the foot. These shoes offer patented cushioning and stability systems for gait guidance ($90 to $110).
