Flexibility is the goal of most exercises and stretches. However, stretching ligaments is not like working out your muscles. You will want to stretch your ligaments to some extent, but you are not going to want to overdo it. Stretching your ligaments too much will result in tears and strains that may take a long time to heal and could require surgery. When it comes to the ligaments, a little bit of stretching goes a long way.
Step 1
Make small circles with your shoulders to stretch ligaments in that area of your body. Stand up straight and extend your arms outward. Make small circles in a front-to-back motion for 15 seconds, and then reverse field and go back to front.
Step 2
Raise your right elbow over your head. Grasp your right elbow and pull it back about 8 to 10 inches. Hold the stretch for five seconds. Switch arms and pull your left elbow back 8 to 10 inches and hold that for five seconds.
Step 3
Place your right foot over your left foot and bend over at the waist. Hold this stretch for three seconds. Place your left foot over your right foot and bend over for three seconds.
Step 4
Sit on the floor and bend your knees so that you can grab your feet and have the soles touch each other. Bend forward at the waist about 8 to 12 inches. Hold this for three seconds and then repeat 10 times.
