Instructions for Infant Blanket Swaddling

Swaddling an infant is a valuable technique for a parent to learn. Wrapping an infant in a warm, snug bundle will give him a sense of security in his new environment outside of the womb. Swaddling an infant may also reduce crying in fussy infants and help to promote prolonged sleep.

Step 1

Spread out the receiving blanket flat on a bed or other safe surface.

Step 2

Fold down the upper right-hand corner of the receiving blanket, forming a straight line where the corner of the blanket was.

Step 3

Place the infant gently on the blanket, with his head just above the portion that has been folded over and his feet aimed toward the lower left-hand corner of the blanket's square shape.

Step 4

Wrap the upper left-hand corner of the blanket around the baby's torso, tucking the corner and extra fabric underneath him.

Step 5

Pull up the corner of the blanket that is beneath the baby's feet over his feet, covering them.

Step 6

Wrap the remaining corner snugly around his body to finish the wrap. Only the child's head and neck should be exposed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose a lightweight receiving blanket to keep the child from getting hot. The infant will feel most snug if his arms are swaddled against his sides, instead of allowing them to be up by his face. Babies often bring their hands to their face when upset, and they can easily scratch their faces. Loosen the bundle after the infant has fallen asleep, if desired.
  • Keep one hand on the child at all times to prevent an accident, which could occur if the child suddenly jerks and rolls over. Swaddle the infant snugly but not so tight that it applies a lot of pressure on the child.

Things You'll Need
