A waxy substance called sebum is produced by sebaceous glands located on the human scalp. Hair can become oily when the body produces an abundance of this sebum. The result is the appearance of greasy hair which can appear dirty even when washed regularly. Oily hair can be a difficult problem to cure. Fortunately, there are some strategies you can employ to help control oil and leave your hair clean, soft and well managed.
Step 1
Wash your hair with a shampoo formulated for oily hair every third day, since daily washing can actually increase the amount of sebum produced. Select shampoos formulated for everyday use, however, as it will be gentle to your scalp and hair.
Step 2
Clean the roots of your hair and scalp thoroughly every time you shampoo. Use warm, not hot water to wet and rinse your hair for best results.
Step 3
Wash your hair in vinegar once a week. Mix one half cup of apple cider vinegar into a full cup of warm water. Apply the vinegar solution after shampooing. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Note the vinegar scent may take several hours to fade.
Step 4
Put witch hazel on your scalp at least once a week. Apply two tbs. of the product to your scalp and thoroughly rub over your entire head. This astringent will help "dry" the scalp and slow down sebum production.
Step 5
Eliminate greasy foods from your diet. It is believed oily foods can contribute to sebaceous glands overproducing sebum. Avoid fatty, oily and fried foods. Replace these with fresh fruits and vegetables for better hair and health.
Step 6
Apply a tablespoon of cornstarch to your scalp before brushing or combing your hair on days when it is particularly greasy. Leave it on for about five minutes and then brush until you can no longer see any white residue.
Tips and Warnings
- Brush your hair beginning a couple of inches down from the top of your head to help avoid pulling oil down the shafts of your hair.
- Do not use conditioner more than once weekly if you have oily hair as this can increase the problem. Choose a light conditioner that will not contribute to your problem. Avoid the use of styling gels as these will make your hair greasier.
