Side Effects of Anucort-Hc

Anucort-HC is one of the many brand names for a corticosteroid that is used in the rectum in the treatment of hemorrhoids and mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. According to Drugs.com, the generic name is hydrocortisone. This type of medication, which is by prescription only, may be used when the problem is not responding to other drugs. Anucort-HC also may be used to treat rectal inflammation from radiation therapy.

Serious Side Effects

Using Anucort-HC may induce some serious side effects that require a consultation with your physician. These are reported as less common or rare by the Mayo Clinic. They may include stabbing pains, sensations of skin burning or tingling, skin itching, chills, bleeding from the rectum, diarrhea, rectal dryness or burning and rectal itching. Others may include depression, fevers, euphoria, mood swings, changes in your personality, blisters in the hair follicles that are itchy, red or painful, and infections.

Temporary Side Effects

Anucort-HC also may produce some side effects at the beginning of treatment that will go away as therapy progresses. If they do not, call your doctor. These may include abnormal weight gain, dizziness, scaly and dry skin, hair thinning on the scalp, appetite increases, skin becoming fragile and thin, increased sweating, a sensation of spinning and discoloration of the skin, usually lightening.

Long-Term Side Effects

Most corticosteroids are intended for short-term use. If you use Anucort-HC for longer periods, you may experience more side effects from it. These include pain in the abdomen, mood changes, thirstiness, development of a hunchback, menstrual cycle irregularities, headaches, appetite loss, muscle cramps, acne and backaches. Other long-term use side effects may include coughing that produces blood, pain in the joints, an irregular heartbeat, purple or blue skin patches, muscle weakness, reduced infection resistance, pain in the eyes, light sensitivity, osteoporosis, nausea, eye redness, gradual loss of vision or blurring, shortness of breath and tearing. You also may experience a weak pulse, abnormal tiredness, insomnia, breathing difficulties, abnormal sexual ability or decreased desire in males, wounds that heal more slowly and unusual growth of hair on the face.
