Because honey does not cause the skin to dry out or peel and flake, like some acne products, it makes a safe acne fighter. According to the website Get Rid of Pimples, honey is most effective when used as a mask. Although there are a variety of ways to create a honey mask, the recipes are all relatively simple and easy to follow.

Benefits

According to the website, Threesugarsplease, a honey mask is beneficial for acne prone skin because of its natural antibacterial qualities. In addition, honey helps reduce inflammation and redness. Because of the humectants in it, honey is also moisturizing, unlike many acne products that can dry out the skin.

Ingredients

The ingredients can vary in honey masks, but if the mask is homemade, the most important ingredient is a good quality honey. As described on the website, World of Honey, the best honey to use is either a medical grade or raw variety. Manuka honey has naturally added antibacterial qualities. How to Get Rid of Pimples suggests adding cinnamon, lemon juice and oatmeal to the honey.

Types of Masks

Homemade honey mask recipes abound, but the website Good Clean Luv suggests the Apple Honey Mask. You can also buy honey at stores and over the Internet. Korres makes a Thyme Honey Mask, although it is not specifically geared towards acne-prone skin.

Make Your Own Mask

Try a simple honey mask made by applying raw honey directly onto the face and leaving on for 10 minutes before rinsing, suggests Benefits-of-Honey. A more complex honey mask, detailed on Good Clean Luv, describes grating a medium apple and mixing it with 4 tbsp. of honey. Smooth this mixture over the face and rinse off after 10 minutes. How to Get Rid of Pimples suggests mixing honey with cinnamon, lemon juice and oatmeal. Leave the mixture on for 20 to 30 minutes and then remove with warm water.

How to buy

If you want to buy a honey mask instead of making one yourself, you can choose from a variety of brands, both online and in stores. Brands like Alpine Silk, Korres and Claymedicx all make honey masks. The downside to buying a honey mask, according to the World of Honey website, is that you cannot be sure if the honey or something else in the product is what cured your acne.
