The rate at which you burn calories while resting is known as your basal metabolic rate (BMR.) You can calculate an estimate of your BMR from an equation, given certain assumptions. This calculation assumes that you're in a metabolically neutral environment, which generally means room temperature. Your BMR calculation also assumes that you're not actively digesting food, which means you haven't eaten in 12 hours.
Step 1
Measure your height in centimeters with a tape measure. You can also measure your height in inches and convert to centimeters by multiplying your height in inches by 2.54.
Step 2
Weigh yourself in kilograms with a scale. You can also weigh yourself in pounds and convert to kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.205.
Step 3
Calculate your BMR if you're female. This is given by the equation B = (6.25 x H) + (9.99 x W) -- (4.92 x A) -- 161. In this equation, B is your BMR in calories per day, H is your height in centimeters, W is your weight in kilograms and A is your age in years.
Step 4
Calculate your BMR if you're male. This is given by the equation B = (6.25 x H) + (9.99 x W) -- (4.92 x A) + 5. If you're a 40-year-old male weighing 71 kilograms who is 175 centimeters tall, your BMR is (6.25 x H) + (9.99 x W) -- (4.92 x A) + 5 = 1,621 calories per day.
