The weight bench is the most common piece of fitness equipment. It supports you in many exercises like the bench press. The weight bench consists of a padded wood board, steel support frames and attachments. If it breaks, safety is your first concern. When looking to repair the bench, examine each part. The bench can be repaired as long as it is safe afterward.
Steps to Fixing the Bench
Step 1
Check the support frame. This is made of squared-off metal shafts. If the metal itself is damaged and cannot be welded, then you need to get a new bench press frame. Even if you can weld any cracks, the strength of the repair may not be as good as a newly formed metal structure. When the bench is fixed, test it for stability. If it wobbles, take a look at the support frame attachments.
Step 2
Inspect the padded bench. It consists of a sheet of plywood, some foam padding and a vinyl cover. If the wood is broken, you need to replace the bench back itself. Find out how the bench back is attached to the support frame. This entails having several bolts and washers on the underside of the board. These bolts are screwed into threaded inserts, which are countersunk into the backside of the board, in alignment with the holes of the frame itself.
Step 3
Check for any bending in the metal frame. If the support structure itself is warped in any way, such as bent out of shape, you should replace the bench if you cannot repair it. Also, check for any warping in the wooden board that is enclosed in the padded back attached to the frame of the weight bench. If the wood is warped, it must be replaced because it cannot be bent without breaking it.
Step 4
Examine the hinge attachments. If there is any structural damage to the hinges, you need to replace the hinges on the bench press. Check the bolts by tightening each one with the socket wrench. Replace any bolts that are broken, stripped, rusted or missing. Make sure the bolts are not missing any washers or nuts. Also check that the inserts in the backside of the wooden bench board are secure and not loose or missing. Fix this problem by replacing those if necessary as well.
Tips and Warnings
- Make sure the weight bench can be fixed to work safely and properly. You do not want a bench that might collapse when you are lifting. In some cases, you are better off just replacing the entire weight bench with a new one.
- When fixing a weight-lifting bench, always have someone help you, as one person needs to hold the upright supports while the other person tightens the bolts and nuts when reattaching the parts. You may also need the help of an expert to repair the vinyl covering with the use of a staple gun.
