Signs That a Concerta Dose Is Too Much

Concerta (generic name methylphenidate) is a central nervous system medication used to treat the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Taken once a day, Concerta comes in four different prescription strengths. Many patients find the first dosage is not always the correct one, and that finding the dosage that is right for you is a process of trial and error under the guidance of a qualified physician. Understanding the signs that a Concerta dose is too much is important so that you can communicate this with your doctor, who will then make the proper adjustments.

Heart Rate & Blood Pressure

A fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat, which is often accompanied by a severe headache, is another sign that the Concerta dose is too high. Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure carefully to make sure it does not become alarmingly elevated, another sign that the Concerta dosage needs to be reduced.

Mood Disturbances

Although rare, mood disturbances that can include mood changes, confusion, paranoia, and even delusions or hallucinations, can occur with Concerta. This is a huge indication that the dose is extremely high or that Concerta is being taken in abusive amounts.

Sedated

When a child appears to be a "duller" version of their old self or as if they have been sedated, this is an indication that the Concerta dose being administered is too high. Contact your doctor right away, as lowering the dose should allow your child to manage his ADHD symptoms without a feeling of lethargy.
