Eyes that are swollen and pink are telltale signs of crying. To reduce them in order to show up for work or school, there are a few things to do. Using cold water to get the skin to tighten around the eyes can help as can using herbs such as eyebright, chamomile and triphala, an Ayurvedic (Indian) combination of three herbs. Each of these herbs are safe to use for the eyes, but if you are allergic to them, do not use them. Last, apply makeup artfully to conceal any trace of emotional upset and catharsis. No one need know what you went through before you arrived to do your work.
Step 1
Use cold water to reduce the swelling. Keeping your eyes closed, splash your face with cold water several times. This will create a bracing effect that can also quickly change your mood from the one that caused you to cry. Alternately, soak a clean wash cloth in cold water, wring it out and place over closed eyes. Leave for a few minutes.
Step 2
Brew two bags of chamomile tea Let it cool and press out the liquid from the teabags. Place one over each eyelid and rest lying down for at least 10 minutes. If you don't have chamomile, use bulk herbs in the third step below.
Step 3
Steep one tablespoon of eyebright or triphala herbs in a cup of hot water. (Eyebright and triphala are found online or in health food stores in capsules or bulk herbs.) Soak cotton balls in the eyebright or triphala and squeezing out the liquid; place it over your eyes. If you have an eye cup, use it to gently pour the eyebright or triphala directly into each eye and let it drain.
Step 4
Dab a light concealer around the corners of the eyes and blend. Smudge a very small amount of liquid foundation makeup on the face and powder around the eye. This subtle makeup application will reduce the obvious redness that results from crying.
Step 5
Drink vegetable juices such as parsley, kale, spinach or aloe vera mixed with carrot or ginger. Astringent greens help tighten the skin under the eyes, and aloe vera is soothing to the stomach and carrot juice provides betacarotene, an important antioxidant. These nutrients help fortify your immune system during times of emotional turmoil or change. They also are great for the skin, providing vitamins A and C.
