When having a heart attack, seeking emergency care right away is critical. However, some people find it difficult to recognize the signs and symptoms as something serious. Many women experience different symptoms than men. Such symptoms may range from very mild to severe and can easily be overlooked.
Pain and Discomfort
Chest pain with or without radiation to the arm, pressure and discomfort are possible signs of a heart attack. In women, the pain may manifest in the neck, shoulder, upper back, jaw or abdomen. It may be a "crushing" type of pain, throbbing or even mild pressure. Abdominal pain may also be felt as mild heartburn. If you are feeling pain, with or without other symptoms, seek immediate care.
Shortness of Breath and Sweating
Shortness of breath is a commonly reported symptom in women while having a heart attack. You may also experience sweating, which may be mild or profuse. The shortness of breath may be severe, or it may just be noted on exertion. Any difficulty in breathing needs to be immediately addressed.
Light-headiness, Fainting and Dizziness
Women may experience light-headiness, fainting, or dizziness if having a heart attack. In the event that you experience these symptoms in conjunction with any of the other mentioned symptoms, seek medical attention.
Fatigue
Unexplained fatigue in women may be a warning sign of a heart attack. Your heart is not pumping blood quickly enough through your body, so your organs and tissues may not be receiving enough oxygen. This will make you feel tired and sluggish.
Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting may be present in women while having a heart attack. Although nausea and vomiting may indicate a mild gastrointestinal illness, it is important to assess if you are having any other possible warning signs as well. If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting in conjunction with other symptoms, seek immediate care.
