How to Cure Oily Hair

Oily hair is caused by a combination of overactive oil glands and buildup of styling products such as gels and mousse that can make your hair look limp and lifeless. There are many options for dealing with oily hair, including using things such as lemon juice, vinegar and baby powder. Below are some simple options you can try to help cure oily hair.

Step 1

Mix 3 tbsp. white vinegar with 2 tsp. lemon juice and 1 cup warm water. Massage the mixture into your scalp thoroughly and leave it on your hair for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Step 2

Blend 1/2 tsp. of aloe vera gel with 1 tbsp. lemon juice and 4 tbsp. of shampoo. Mix well, wash your hair with it and rinse.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of baby powder directly to dry hair on the roots, and brush through thoroughly. Tilting your head downward with your hair hanging toward the floor is the best way to get the baby powder on the roots, and will avoid getting it on the rest of your body or clothing.

Step 4

Add 8 drops of rose geranium and 8 drops of lemongrass essential oil to 8 oz. of shampoo. Incorporating these natural essential oils into your daily shampoo will help reduce the amount of oil in your hair.

Step 5

Mix 1/2 cup of beer with 2 cups of water. Apply the mixture to your hair and rinse. Any alcoholic beverage will help dry out the hair, although beer helps give it some extra shine.

Tips and Warnings

  • Washing your hair regularly is necessary, but it's not necessary to wash your hair more than once a day. The body produces oil naturally in response to dryness on the surface of the skin. Over-stimulation of the hair follicles will encourage your body to produce more oil. Hair products such as hair sprays and gels can make the hair oily, and so should be used minimally. If you have oily hair, you can omit the use of a conditioner or apply it only to the ends. Use oil-free personal care products and clean your thoroughly each day. Oily skin can contribute to the amount of oil in your hair.
  • If your scalp becomes itchy, red or painful when applying any of the above items to your hair, discontinue use immediately. If you feel you may be having an allergic reaction, contact a physician immediately.
