How to Make Glycerine Soap

Glycerin soap has been hailed for centuries for its moisturizing properties. You can make beautiful glycerin soaps at home for a fraction of department store prices. Start by mastering this basic glycerin soap recipe, and then get creative with different shapes, sizes, and fragrances.

Step 1

Cut the glycerin into cubes with a dough scraper. Make the cubes small enough to fit into your microwaveable bowl or measuring cup.

Step 2

Heat the glycerin in a microwave oven on the high setting, checking every 15 seconds, until it is completely melted.

Step 3

Add liquid food coloring to the melted glycerin and stir with a coffee stirrer until the food coloring is completely incorporated.

Step 4

Spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the inside of the milk or juice carton. This will prevent the soap from sticking to the carton after it cools.

Step 5

Pour the melted glycerin into the milk or juice carton and allow the glycerin to cool for at least two hours.

Step 6

Tear off the carton.

Step 7

Slice the block into bars using the dough scraper.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use only a small amount of food coloring because food coloring can be very concentrated. Remove air bubbles in the melted glycerin by spraying the bubbles with rubbing alcohol. Do not move the soap mold until the soap is hardened to avoid wrinkles in your soap. Wrap finished soap in plastic wrap until you are ready to use it. You can also purchase novelty soap molds in various shapes or sizes from a craft store or use ice cube trays for small soaps. Add fragrance to melted soap using soap fragrance purchased at a craft store.
  • Keep soap making supplies out of the reach of children.
