Rhytidoplasties (also known as face lifts) are common plastic surgery procedures that can take years off the age of your facial features by restoring them to their younger form. This involves reshaping some facial features, notably the cheek bones, and tightening up skin to minimize the sagging look older skin can develop. Even though most face lifts are done without any setbacks or problems, there will still be some post-operative care involved after the procedure is done. You will experience some pain and won't have the full function of your face for at least a week, and it's important you take the necessary steps to make sure the surgery properly heals.
Step 1
Have a friend to drive you home after your operation, and help you with tasks for the first few days after your facelift. Get plenty of rest, intake plenty of fruit and water (to prevent constipation), and take any medications as prescribed by your doctor. Use two pillows to keep your head elevated and reduce swelling. Make sure you have been allotted 2 to 3 weeks of leave from your employer.
Step 2
Begin walking as soon as you are comfortable, even if it is just a few steps at a time. This reduces swelling and minimizes your chances of developing blood clots. Abstain from any strenuous activity that elevates your heart, including sex and housework, for two weeks. Keep sterile strips and gauze on open cuts for several days, replacing at least once a day.
Step 3
Wait 48 hours after returning home to bathe yourself. Do not shower until 48 hours after the drainage tubes have been removed. Do not enter a sauna for at least 2 to 3 months.
Step 4
Avoid exposing surgical scars to the sun for at least one year. This could intensify the visibility of the scar. Use a sunblock of SPF 30 or greater when sun exposure is not an option.
Step 5
Remove sutures 3 to 5 days after surgery, or as directed by your doctor. Some sutures and other metal clips holding together your face post-surgery may remain for up to two weeks. Drainage tubes are usually removed 1 to 2 days after surgery. You will need to visit your doctor to have these removed.
