When a loved one abuses alcohol, it can have devastating effects on the relationship. Emotional and physical problems can occur once alcoholism begins to affect someone's life. Many relationships fail unless the alcoholic is willing to get help for his addiction. Alcohol doesn't affect just relationships; it can affect other areas in someone's life. Learning what the consequences are when drinking in a relationship will help you understand the problems an alcoholic faces day to day.

Financial Losses

One way alcohol affects a relationship is through financial loss. This could be from being on probation from alcohol-related drunk driving or from losing a job because of the use of alcohol. Each situation costs money and can drain someone's bank account and savings. When someone has problems with alcohol, it can affect her job and her ability to bring in a stable income. This can have a negative effect on a relationship, as it places a financial strain on the social and personal lives of the individual and his friends, co-workers and loved ones.

Violence

In some cases, alcohol can lead to episodes of violent behavior. If someone in the relationship has been drinking, he may begin to show signs of aggression or careless behavior. When drinking, an alcoholic may also be difficult to reason with and may be combative toward his significant other. This type of behavior can be devastating to the relationship; seek counseling immediately.

Communication Problems

Someone who has a problem with alcohol may also experience communication problems with her significant other or other family members. These communication problems stem from the effects of alcohol. A dazed or confused state of mind or completely blacking out make it difficult for the alcoholic to communicate and deal with setting up appointments, setting dates, being somewhere on time or being a responsible citizen.

Poor Judgment

When someone abuses alcohol in a relationship, he may find himself making poor judgment calls. This means being spontaneous in a way that could harm him or others. The overuse of alcohol may lead to intimate situations involving someone of the opposite sex, resulting in infidelity. This can ruin marriages and personal relationships. Drinking and driving while under the influence may lead to personal injury and breaking the law.

Effects

A relationship, whether it be an intimate relationship, marriage, friendship, parental relationship or work relationship, can be affected by alcohol. Erratic behavior, lack of adequate daily performance and an impaired state of being can affect any relationship negatively. This can lead to losing relationships due to the persistent distorted behavior stemming from excessive alcohol abuse.
